damn good company

December 2, 2011

Environmental journalist Michelle Nijhuis, who very ably edited my recent  story about Opportunity, Montana in High Country News, has penned a piece for in which she collects examples of environmental journalism that one way or another subvert the typical enviro-journo tropes, which are typically, and sometimes tiresomely, if often unavoidably, bummerish. (Reminding me of favorite author David James Duncan, who once described the difficulties his publisher, Sierra Club Books, experienced trying to sell an ongoing narrative that amounted to what Duncan memorably called “a spiral downer.”)

Anyhow, Michelle’s examples include pieces written by John McPhee, Edwin Dobb, Ian Frazier, and, umm, flatteringly, me.

Read Michelle’s piece here.
